ARRANGEMENT

The Michail M. Dorizas Papers are organized into two series: Correspondence and Printed Materials. The Correspondence series is arranged chronologically and the Printed Materials series alphabetically.

BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE

Michail M. Dorizas, athlete, educator, traveler, received his Ph.D., 1924 from the University of Pennsylvania. He taught economic and political geography at the Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania from 1919-1929 as an Instructor and from 1929-1957 as Assistant Professor. He was known as the world’s strongest man, representing Greece in three Olympic games. As a student at the University of Pennsylvania, he excelled in football, track and field, and wrestling, holding the intercollegiate championship title for three straight years. He went on three world tours and served in the United States Army during World War I.

SCOPE AND CONTENT

Correspondence between Mike Dorizas and Benjamin Rose Hoffman make up almost the entirety of this collection. These letters document their strong friendship and cover the following topics: wrestling and other sporting activities at the University of Pennsylvania, travel, service during World War I, and his early teaching career at the University. There are photoprints, programs, tickets, announcements, publications, broadsides, and clippings relative to these same interests.
