BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE

Alfred Bendiner was born in Pittsburgh, PA. He attended Northeast High School in Philadelphia and the Pennsylvania Museum School of Industrial Arts before entering the Army in 1918. He received both a bachelor of architecture degree in 1922 and a master’s degree in 1927 from the University of Pennsylvania. Bendiner was a member of F.A.I.A and served as president for the Philadelphia Chapter of the American Institute of Architects. His interests and accomplishments, however, extended far beyond architecture.

In 1937, when he accompanied the University Museum’s archeological expedition to Tepe Gawra and Khafaji, Iraq, Bendiner’s task was to draw architectural blueprints of these sites. He was also architect to the university’s Tikal-Tikal archeological expedition to Guatamala in 1960. His lithographs, watercolors and ink, crayon and drawings are held in the collections of private collectors and museums, including the Philadelphia Museum of Art and the National Gallery in Washington.

Bendiner’s witty essays and illustrations of buildings and city life regularly appeared not only in University of Pennsylvania publications, but also in the Philadelphia Bulletin, the Atlantic Monthly, Harper’s and other newspapers and magazines. His published books included Music to My Eyes (1952), Bendiner’s Philadelphia (1964), and Translated from the Hungarian (1967).
