PROVENANCE

The Undergraduate Medical Association Records were separated from the University Archives as part of the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania Public Relations Records (UPC 511), which came from John Shea, editor of Penn Medicine, in January 2000 (Accession Number 2000: 04).

HISTORICAL NOTE

The Undergraduate Medical Association (UMA) was formed in 1908 by University of Pennsylvania Medical School students, based on the American Medical Association. Open to all Medical School student at Penn, the purpose of the UMA was to foster extra-curricular activities among medical students, and encourage research. The governing body consisted of delegates from each of the Medical School societies, representatives from each class, and the members of its formed committees. The annual UMA Day was held in April consisting of morning and afternoon sessions of original student research papers, and a banquet during the evening session. The UMA was active among the medical students up through 1970.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

The Undergraduate Medical Association Records consists of a scrapbook, published proceedings from 1908, and loose items related to its annual meeting. The scrapbook consists of programs, signatures of attendees, newspaper clippings and correspondence to speakers.

The Archives holds a run of the U.M.A. News from 1949 – 1970 (UPM 1910). Additional information on the Undergraduate Medical Association can be found in the University Relations Information Files (UPF 8.5I).
