AGENCY HISTORY
The Botanical Society of Pennsylvania was founded at the University of Pennsylvania in October 1897. Its aim was to foster the natural love and sympathy of each one for plants. It sponsored popular meetings and scientific meetings on a fortnightly basis. At the popular meeting, papers were presented and short lectures and demonstrations were given on topics related to the study of plants. To arouse the popular interest various exhibits were organized from greenhouses around Philadelphia. The scientific meetings were to provide a forum for those who wanted to discuss their investigations. In spring and summer, the Society also arranged field excursions.
The Society had its final meeting on February 15, 1958. The reason for its closure is not clear.
SCOPE AND CONTENT
This small collection includes meeting records of the Society–announcement/agenda material as well as minutes–from 1897 to 1958, Transactions and Proceedings published from 1897-1909, a scrapbook containing photographs and clippings concerning an Easter excursion in 1926, lists of members, and a financial day book dating from 1909 to 1942.
