BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE
Harry E. Morton was born on August 4, 1906 in Wayne, Michigan. He attended the University of Michigan where he received his undergraduate and graduate degrees between 1930 and 1936. Dr. Morton started his academic career at the University of Pennsylvania in 1931 as an Instructor in Bacteriology. He would spend his 44 year career teaching at Penn’s School of Medicine, rising to the rank of Professor of Bacteriology specializing in microbiology. Dr. Morton was appointed chief of microbiology at the Pepper Lab in 1967, and was the recipient of the American Society of Microbiology’s Kimble Award in 1968. He became professor emeritus in 1975. Dr. Morton passed away on November 23, 1988.
SCOPE AND CONTENT
The Harry E. Morton Papers consists of six class register books (1931-1947), and 36 class rolls (1931-1966) for Microbiology courses he taught in the School of Medicine.
Dr. Morton’s professional papers were acquired by the Center for the History of Microbiology / American Society for Microbiology Archives.
