PROVENANCE

The Fred Haber papers were donated to the University Archives by the Department of Electrical and Systems Engineering, School of Engineering and Applied Science, University of Pennsylvania in 2003 (accession number 2003.061).

ARRANGEMENT

The Fred Haber papers are organized into five series – Consulting; General File; Lectures and Seminars; Research and Writings; and Teaching Material – each of which is arranged alphabetically. There are some instances in the Consulting series where multiple reports exist for each project; in such cases the reports are arranged chronologically. The Teaching Material series is arranged according to the course number and the material for each course is arranged chronologically by year. Materials for which no course number was indicated are arranged alphabetically at the end of the series.

BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE

Fred Haber was Professor of Electrical and Systems Engineering at the University of Pennsylvania from 1951 to 1987. The Fred Haber papers document his university teaching as well as his outside consulting work and research.

Fred Haber was born on July 1, 1921 in New York, N.Y. He earned a B.S. from Pennsylvania State University in 1948, and M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Pennsylvania in 1953 and 1960, respectively. He joined the faculty of the University of Pennsylvania’s Moore School of Electrical Engineering in 1951 and taught undergraduate and graduate courses in probability, statistics, random processes, communications and information theory, and coding. Haber retired from the University of Pennsylvania in 1987.

Haber participated in numerous research projects outside of the university during the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s, including projects for the United States Air Force, Army, and Navy, and for the National Aeronautical and Space Administration (NASA). He also assisted the Philadelphia Police Department with the implementation of a closed-circuit television surveillance system.

Fred Haber died on September 20, 2007 in Yarmouth, ME. He was survived by his two children, daughter Jill and son Carl.

SCOPE AND CONTENT

The Fred Haber papers are professional in nature. They document Haber’s career as Professor of Electrical and Systems Engineering at the University of Pennsylvania through lecture notes, assignments, and exams from the undergraduate and graduate courses he taught. There is also documentation of Haber’s work outside of the university with the United States military, NASA, and the Philadelphia Police Department. This documentation consists of reports, contracts, and proposals. Other research conducted by Haber is also represented in the papers, mostly in the form of notes and hand-written articles.
