BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE

Born in 1900 in Belle River, Prince Edward Island, Canada, he attended Queens College, Taunton, England and Riverside (CA) High School before entering Whittier College in 1918. He was graduated from Whittier in 1923 with the degree of Bachelor of Arts, received the degree of Master of Arts from the University of Wisconsin in 1924, and the degree of Doctor of Philosophy from Iowa State University in 1927.

While in graduate school, he worked as an college history instructor and high school teacher. After receiving his Ph.D., he was appointed as Assistant Professor of History at the University of South Dakota in 1927, but he left the Midwest for the East Coast, working at Princeton University and then the University of Pennsylvania as an Instructor in History. He also taught during the summers at Iowa State and the University of Oregon. In 1937, he was appointed Assistant Professor of History in 1937. He was given the additional appointment of University Archivist in 1945. He was promoted to the rank of Associate Professor of History in 1971. He retired from the University later in that year.

Dodson’s primary research interest besides the history of the University of Pennsylvania was the colonial history of Pennsylvania and Virginia, upon which he wrote several articles and edited and wrote a few books. He died in 1977.
