BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE

Roland G. Curtin was born in 1839 in Philadelphia, PA. He earned the degree of Doctor in Philosophy from the University of Pennsylvania in 1871. He was the president of the University of Pennsylvania chapter of the Alpha Mu Pi Omega medical fraternity. Later, he taught at the University of Pennsylvania from 1883 to 1903 and became President of the Philadelphia Hospital Medical Board. Much of his work focused on the relationship between climatology and medicine. Curtin died in March 1914.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

Scrapbook 1 (1890-1902) contains diary entries, newspaper clippings, pamphlets, pictures, maps, travel records, and mementos. It focuses on Curtin’s involvement in climatology, including menus from Yellowstone National Park, pamphlets about the American Climatological Association, and newspaper articles about Salt Lake in Utah. There are also some newspaper articles about Curtin traveling with a party of fellow surgeons.

Scrapbook 2 (1866-1932) contains photographs, pages of books, newspaper clippings, event programs, letters, and certificates. It focuses on Curtain’s medical career, including his role as President of the Philadelphia Hospital Medical Board. It also includes letters of acceptance into various societies and clubs.

Scrapbook 3 (1889-1896) primarily contains newspaper clippings, as well as some pictures, pamphlets, and invitations. Much of it relates to Curtin’s family, specifically his wife’s involvement in the Pennsylvania Society of Colonial Dames, reports on his father, Andrew Gregg Curtin, who was governor of Pennsylvania, and marriage announcements of other relatives.
