PROVENANCE
Gift of Hilyard Barr, July 29, 1994.
BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE
Courtland Hilyard Barr entered the University of Pennsylvania in September of 1942. He served in the Army and graduated from the University in 1948. As a student he played on the football team holding the position of tackle. The 1943 season was particularly successful with the team winning the Ivy League Championship.
SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE
This scrapbook, principally devoted to the 1943 football season, is a reproduction of items compiled by Barr’s mother, Edna Hurlock Barr and his cousin, Rachel Barr. While dedicated to the memories of Coach George Munger, the book also honors the team’s most famous player, Bob Odell. Each game played during the 1943 season is well documented with program covers and game tickets followed by clippings, letters, plays, and other ephemeral pieces pertinent to that game. Additional information on the effects of the war on college students and society in general may also be seen.
