AGENCY HISTORY

The Federated Medical Resources was founded in 1966 as a non-profit corporate group by five universities and colleges in the Philadelphia area–the Hahnemann Medical College and Hospital, the Thomas Jefferson University, Temple University, the University of Pennsylvania, and the Woman’s Medical College of Pennsylvania. The mission of the corporation was to provide its members with laboratory animals for use in their research and training programs. For that purpose, the institution was to give quality care to the animals during the observation period following experimental procedures and to breed species for specific needs of its members.

The corporation purchased a 156-acre site, known as Honeybrook Farm, fifty-five miles from Philadelphia in Honey Brook, Chester County, Pennsylvania. On this site, it raised such animals as dogs, cats, rabbits, raccoons, opossums, pigs, and monkeys, and supplied the members with over 10,000 laboratory animals each year. The institution got matching funds in early years from both the National Institutes of Health and the Pennsylvania State Legislature. In August 1989, the Board of Directors of the institution decided to close its research facility at Honey Brook and to dissolve the corporation.

SCOPE AND CONTENT

The collection documents the administration of the Federated Medical Resources throughout the twenty-three years of its existence. It consists of administrative files, financial records and animal health records. The administrative files includes policy and procedure material as well as the institution’s correspondence with its major business associates–the American Association for Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care, the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science, the Animal Welfare Committee, Pennsylvania State Department of Environmental Resources, the United States Department of Health, Education, and Welfare, and Department of Agriculture.
